The holidays are here! Cue the joy, twinkling lights, festive gatherings—and maybe just a touch of panic. We get it! This season is everything all at once. And if you're a parent, it might also be the time you’re thinking about how to host a party that's both fun and safe for everyone involved. Research has shown that there is a notable uptick in first time substance use around the holidays. But, what you may not know, is that there are things you can do to help lower these chances.
So, what do we know for sure? For starters, what we model as parents matters—a lot. From the way we celebrate to the access our kids have to alcohol and other substances, they’re paying attention. So while that holiday-themed cocktail may be perfect for your adult-only parties, we invite you to consider a fresh take for your family-focused festivities.
We’ve got research-backed tips to keep things merry, bright, and safe for everyone. And the best part? You won’t feel like you’re missing out on a thing. Here are some tips to help you host a kid-friendly holiday party that everyone will enjoy.
Know the Social Host Ordinance
Before planning your event, familiarize yourself with your local Social Host Ordinance. In Marin County, this law holds hosts accountable if alcohol is consumed by underage guests on their property, even if the hosts didn’t supply it. The ordinance is designed to protect teens and reduce underage drinking, and violations can result in significant fines or other consequences. By knowing and respecting this law, you’re not only protecting teens but also setting a positive example for your community.
Tip: Make it clear on your invitation that your event is alcohol-free to set expectations from the start.
Plan Ahead
Hosting a kid/teen-friendly holiday party starts with thoughtful planning. Think of this as an opportunity to have an open conversation with your kids/teens. Place the focus on your values, your love for them and your desire to keep things fun, without the worry about alcohol.
Guest List: Keep the guest list manageable and invite a mix of people who you believe will be in support of a healthy, fun environment.
Activities: Provide engaging activities to keep everyone entertained, such as games, crafts, a holiday movie marathon, or a karaoke setup.
Food & Drinks: Offer plenty of delicious snacks, a festive dinner menu, and a variety of non-alcoholic beverages to keep guests satisfied. (We’ve got some suggestions down below!)
Bonus: Set up a DIY hot chocolate bar with toppings like whipped cream, marshmallows, peppermint sticks, and sprinkles!
Set Clear Ground Rules
Communicate expectations with guests, before the party. Let everyone know that:
The event will be alcohol-free.
Guests are expected to respect your home and one another.
The party will have adult supervision.
Fun will be had!
Teens appreciate clear boundaries, especially when they know they are in place to keep them safe.
Tip: We have some tips to help you navigate these conversations with other parents!
Be Visible and Stay Engaged
As the host, your presence matters. Make it a point to be visible throughout the party and engage with the teens and their activities. This doesn’t mean hovering, but rather being available to offer support, answer questions, and maintain a safe atmosphere.
Check in regularly with different groups of guests.
Enlist other adults to help supervise while also enjoying the event. (This can be your party, too!)
Create open spaces where everyone can be seen and heard, reducing opportunities for risky behavior.
Offer Festive Non-Alcoholic Holiday Drinks
Alcohol isn’t necessary to make a holiday party feel special. Delight your guests with creative and festive non-alcoholic beverages. While there are plenty of new and innovative alcohol-free options available today, you can keep it super simple with these:
Cranberry Sparkler: Cranberry juice, sparkling water, a splash of lime, and fresh cranberries for garnish.
Holiday Punch: A mix of pomegranate juice, orange juice, and ginger ale, topped with orange slices and pomegranate seeds.
Winter Mocktail: Apple cider, a splash of lemon, cinnamon, and a cinnamon stick for stirring.
Hot Apple Cider: Warm cider infused with cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise.
Ponche Navideño Mexicano - fruit punch served hot
Conquito - Puerto Rico Eggnog (made alcohol-free)
Set up a drink station with fun garnishes like fruit slices, fresh herbs, and decorative stir sticks so everyone can customize their beverages.
By hosting an alcohol-free holiday party, you’re providing teens with a safe space to have fun and celebrate the season. Your efforts to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels included and supported will leave a lasting impression on teens and their families.
Remember, the most memorable parties aren’t about what’s missing—they’re about the laughter, connection, and joy that fill the room.
Cheers to a holiday season full of fun, connection, and peace of mind!
